Addict CZSK Conference

Bratislava, Slovakia

The conference focused on addiction policy in Central Europe, with a particular emphasis on the interaction between public health, mental health, and evidence-based regulation at national and EU levels.

The programme addressed a broad range of contemporary challenges, including digital addictions, cyberbullying, alcohol consumption, cannabis regulation, new psychomodulatory substances, and behavioural risks. Discussions highlighted the need to move beyond isolated policy responses and to better integrate addiction policy with mental health strategies, prevention, and harm reduction.

As part of the conference, Michael Fanta contributed to the expert programme with a presentation focusing on the perceived harmfulness of nicotine products. Drawing on results from a pilot experimental study among university students, the presentation examined how consumers assess relative risks of different nicotine products, how they interact with product packaging, and what role information design plays in shaping understanding. The findings highlighted limits of packaging-based communication and pointed to the importance of clearer, comparative risk information as a complement to regulatory measures.

In addition, Michael Fanta moderated a policy panel on responsible regulation and harm reduction approaches to legal addictive substances. The discussion explored how evidence-based regulation, monitoring tools, and public education can reduce societal harms while respecting personal autonomy and market realities. Panelists shared perspectives from health policy, clinical practice, and regulatory experience across EU member states.

Overall, the conference provided a multidisciplinary platform connecting applied research, clinical experience, and public policy, reinforcing the importance of rational, data-driven approaches to addiction regulation and prevention in a rapidly evolving risk environment.
